38th Annual Symposium on the American Indian

Oklahoma Fancy Dance

A style of dance developed in Oklahoma in the 1920s, the Fancy Dance relies heavily on bright colors and fast movement from the dancers. The 38th Annual Symposium on the American Indian at Northeastern State University, Oklahoma Fancy Dance, celebrates the achievements and innovations of American Indian tribes from across the country.

The 2010 symposium welcomes new and familiar faces to deliver lectures, showcase talent, host discussions, and introduce you to various aspects of American Indian culture from tribes across the country. Highlights of Oklahoma Fancy Dance include the 2010 American Indian Symposium Film Series, Indigenous Language Documentation and Revitalization Seminar, Third Annual Oklahoma Workshop on North American Languages, NSU Spring Powwow, and keynote addresses from Dr. Henrietta Mann, founding president of Cheyenne & Arapaho Tribal College, Dr. Akira Yamamoto, Native languages expert, and Commander John Herrington, retired U.S. Air Force and NASA astronaut.
